Let's make connections!
Hi, I'm Marina!
I offer one-on-one math tutoring on Zoom and in Asheville, NC for students in elementary, middle, high school, and sometimes college.
Imagine if your student saw math differently, grew confident in their abilities, made connections, set goals, and achieved them.
I believe they can, and I can help them get there. Math doesn't need to be as scary as it seems!
My absolute favorite part of tutoring is seeing the spark of confidence, excitement, and satisfaction on a student's face when they have an "aha" moment - when something clicks and makes sense for the first time. That's why I left my career in business improvement to tutor full-time - for more of those incredible little moments!
I live in Asheville with my husband Austin and 114 plants (and counting). I enjoy hiking, reading, collaging, caring for my plants, and learning new ways to understand math. I have been tutoring (and loving it!) since 2013 when I was working on my Bachelor's in Mathematics at Belmont Abbey College.
If you are curious about tutoring, please reach out so we can see if it's the right fit. I'd love to talk!
What does "Tessellate" mean?
tessellate: (v) to form a pattern of repeated shapes that fit together closely, without any gaps
Math can be really tough
Do you find yourself or your student having a hard time with:
Understanding how things are connected
Knowing when to use what you've learned
Remembering procedures, rules, and formulas
Forgetting what you're doing in the middle of a problem
Little mistakes like negative signs
Are you or your student intimidated by:
Fractions
Word Problems
Factoring
Graphing
Square Roots
You can probably relate to at least some of these - you are not alone!
Math is tough for everyone, even the ones who enjoy it, like me- I promise.
...but so are you!
I believe you are just as tough as math, and we can figure out a way for you to connect the dots and make sense out of it.
What I can do for you
I can help your student really understand what they are doing in class and why, and see how capable they are.
I will
work with them through problems
walk them through concepts
challenge them to keep going when they want to give up
try different ways of looking at a concept until we find the one that clicks for them
fill in the gaps they may have from previous years of math
(So many kids have skills or strategies they missed or didn't quite master when they were taught, and then it comes up again years later and they are lost and confused. This is especially common since COVID, and most times they just need some help and practice to nail it down.)
My students learn to
ask themselves questions and look for clues (so they can solve problems when I'm not there)
squeeze the juice out of their mistakes
fight through problems
set goals for themselves
These practices are crucial to developing a growth mindset and over time build up confidence, skill, and grit. The benefits reach far beyond mathematics and the classroom!
